IKEA Keeps it Green

Recent headlines have announced the retail giant IKEA has committed to a sustainability pledge and will invest a huge £171m in its push to become carbon neutral by 2030.

Since committing to phasing out single-use plastic products in 2018, the Swedish furniture company have added another string to their environmental bow, investing half of the money in renewable energy products and the other half towards reforestation.

Over the past decade, the business has input over £2.1bn in sustainability and shows no sign of slowing down. Its projects will be aimed at removing and storing carbon through reforestation and responsible forest management, as wood is one of the key materials used to form its famous flatpacks.

Upon releasing the news, IKEA stakeholder Ingka Group’s Head of Climate & Energy, Karol Gobczynski, stressed the importance in responsibly managed forests playing a ‘vital role in protecting ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and climate change mitigation’.

This impressive ‘Climate Positive’ pledge promises a bright, clean future for IKEA’s production and paves the way for other companies to follow in their green footsteps.
